Queen of Festival Program Scholarships

Sheriff Gregory "Greg" Munks served San Mateo County for 35 years and was chief law enforcement officer for over nine years. During his time in office, Greg Munks managed regional task forces, launched multiple social support initiatives, and established the Queen of the Festival scholarship program.

The Queen of the Festival Scholarship Program aims to support young women from disadvantaged backgrounds in pursuing higher education. Open to high school girls residing or attending school in San Mateo County, the program offers five scholarships totaling $23,000.

Five high school girls compete for the Queen title and a scholarship award of $10,000. Two Princess scholarships are awarded for the first and second runner-up contestants who receive $6,000 and $4,000, respectively. The fourth-place finalist receives $2,000 whereas the fifth-place finalist wins $1,000.

Scholarship candidates are assessed on several criteria including academic merit and volunteer work experience. Applicants must submit two reference letters and a community involvement essay reflecting their community service credentials. The Queen of the Festival Scholarship winners are announced during the annual North Fair Oaks Community Festival.

YMCA Camp Jones Gulch Welcomes Family

The chief law enforcement officer of San Mateo County for nearly 15 years, Sheriff Gregory (Greg) Munks manages a department of 750 employees and an annual budget of $240 million. An active member of the community, Greg Munks has served on the board of directors for the YMCA Camp Jones Gulch.

Adapting to safety protocols related to COVID-19, Camp Jones Gulch has shifted its overnight summer camp programming to accommodate family groups. The new system allows one household to reserve a village, ensuring guests will not come into contact with other visitors during their stay. Separate family groups who have established themselves as part of a “social bubble” may reserve adjacent cabins or tents, providing they observe social distancing recommendations. Each cabin has its own bathroom, and all communal spaces such as the swimming pool and climbing tower are currently closed.

Located about an hour south of San Francisco near La Honda, Camp Jones Gulch offers hiking trails through stunning redwood forests, as well as access to tide pools and local beaches.

CARON Promote Community Involvement

Greg Munks is an accomplished California law enforcement expert whose experience goes back four decades. In the course of his duties, Gregory Munks served for more than 30 years with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. In addition, Greg Munks also served as an officer with the Palo Alto Police Department. Throughout his career, Sheriff Greg Munks has been at the forefront of involving the community in law enforcement initiatives through programs such as CARON.

The CARON (Community Alliance to Revitalize Our Neighborhood) program was launched in 1999 by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office to boost engagement with the local community to further the department’s law enforcement initiatives. Serving North Fair Oaks and other neighboring coastal communities, CARON aims to reduce drug abuse, gangs, and violence, as well as build trust between the community and law enforcement.

CARON initiatives include Youth Dialogues, which offer youth a safe space to speak openly with CARON members about their communities. Through these forums, CARON staff, deputy sheriffs and community members deliberate about past, present and future issues that exist in the community. After the sessions, the young participants fill out a Youth Dialogue survey to share their thoughts regarding the presentation and services the program offers to the community.

CARON also facilitates community workshops that discuss gang, drug, and anti-violence awareness. The aim of these workshops is to educate families about current trends in drug use, including their effects as well as the related paraphernalia. Through gang awareness forums, parents learn the definition of gangs, types of gangs in the community, the reasons why youth join gangs, and typical behaviors associated with gangs.
